FASE 2025 Advanced Course & Symposium

The Forensic Anthropology Society of Europe (FASE) will be hosting its Advanced Workshop in Forensic Anthropology and Symposium at the “Paris-Cité Université”, in Paris, France, from August 28 – 30, 2025.

Enhance your expertise in forensic anthropology by joining our specialized intermediate workshop focused on bone histology. Organized by the Forensic Anthropology Society of Europe (FASE), in collaboration with UMR Babel, Institut Médico-Légal de Paris, and Université Paris Cité, this hands-on training is designed for practitioners with a foundational knowledge of bone biology and histomorphometry, and basic experience in analyzing histological slides.

Program Highlights:

 
August 28th
  • Morning (9am – 1pm):
    • Workshop opening and welcome
    • Lecture: Bone biology and microstructure
    • Lecture: Bone histological techniques (calcified/decalcified samples and staining)
  • Afternoon (2:30pm – 6pm):
    • Lecture: Histomorphology and histomorphometry
    • Differentiating human and animal bones
    • Age-at-death estimation techniques
    • Lecture: Histotaphonomy and post-mortem bone changes
    • Analysis of bone degradation under various conditions
    • Bioerosion identification (bacteria, fungi, etc.)
    • Estimating time since death
August 29th
  • Morning (9am – 1pm):
    • Lecture: Pathological and congenital bone conditions
    • Lecture: Bone trauma histological analysis (Part 1)
    • Characteristics of blunt force, sharp force, and gunshot trauma
    • Bone alterations from exposure to fire
  • Afternoon (2:30pm – 6pm):
    • Lecture: Bone trauma histological analysis (Part 2)
    • Estimating time since injury
    • Early healing signs and cellular responses (skull vs. long bone)
  • Practical session: Case presentations and an opportunity to analyze your own slides
    • Practical Information:
    • Each participant will have individual access to microscopes and computer screens.
    • Learn directly from internationally renowned forensic anthropologists, pathologists, and histologists.

Objectives:

  • Master key techniques in forensic bone histology.
  • Improve interpretation skills for histological findings, understanding both possibilities and limitations in forensic contexts.

FASE Symposium 2025

During the symposium, keynote lectures will be given by renowned researchers focusing on forensic bone histology. Students and researchers will also be given the opportunity to present their research and/or interesting case studies.
